Tourism Malaysia And Malaysia Aviation Group Forge Strategic Partnership To Strengthen Malaysia's Tourism Industry For VMY2026
KUALA LUMPUR, 30 April 2024 — Tourism
Malaysia and Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) have announced the signing of a
Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) today, marking a significant step for a
three-year partnership. This MoU signifies the commitment from both parties to
reinforce Malaysia as the gateway to Asia and beyond and positioning Malaysia
as a preferred tourist destination in the global economy.
The MoU was signed between Tourism Malaysia's Deputy
Director-General (Promotion II), Mr. Lee Tai Hung, and the Chief Commercial
Officer of Airlines (MAG), Mr. Dersenish Aresandiran. The ceremony was
witnessed by Tourism Malaysia's Director-General, Mr. Manoharan Periasamy, and
the Chief Executive Officer of Airlines (MAG), Mr. Ahmad Luqman Bin Mohd Azmi,
at the Sheraton Imperial Hotel, Kuala Lumpur.
The outlook for the Malaysian tourism industry in 2024 is
promising. To achieve a quick return on investment, the focus will be on the
main target markets contributing to the number of tourist arrivals, such as
ASEAN countries, West Asia, South Asia, and East Asia. One strategy is
enhancing air connectivity to provide tourists with more flight accessibility
to Malaysia.
This year, Malaysia aims to attract 27.3 million arrivals with
RM102.7 billion in tourism revenue. To achieve these targets, Tourism Malaysia
is proactively conducting promotional and marketing activities to empower the
‘Malaysia Truly Asia’ brand.
Mr. Manoharan Periasamy, Director-General of Tourism Malaysia,
stated that as Malaysia moves towards Visit Malaysia Year 2026 (VMY2026), the
country envisions welcoming 35.6 million tourists, generating target receipts
of RM147.1 billion.
“Tourism Malaysia and MAG will collaborate to leverage each
other’s strengths, providing more unrivalled services and seamless connections.
More joint activities are planned, including familiarisation trips to Malaysia,
marketing promotional activities, and advertising campaigns to feature Malaysia
as a preferred holiday destination on the global stage.”
Chief Executive Officer of Airlines (MAG) Mr. Ahmad Luqman bin
Mohd Azmi commented, “We look forward working with Tourism Malaysia, leveraging
our strengths as a national carrier and aviation hub to pursue sustainable
traffic growth in an increasingly competitive landscape. With our strong
network and track record of working with partners through trade and consumer
initiatives, we’re well-placed to support the nation’s tourism ambitions. This
partnership reinforces MAG’s commitment to supporting the goals of Visit
Malaysia Year 2026 (VMY2026) through positioning Malaysia as the gateway for
Asia and beyond.”
The MoU will lead to the development and implementation of a
three-year partnership program in key international markets, not just in the
leisure passenger segment but also in MICE and transit passengers. The
partnership will also anchor on Malaysia Airlines’ Bonus Side Trip (BST)
offering, which provides passengers with a complimentary flight to a domestic
destination on the Malaysia Airlines network, essentially providing passengers
the opportunity to experience what Malaysia has to offer. BST will be expanded
to include more exclusive deals curated to allow visitors to experience more of
the country's attractions, points of interest, and cultural wonders of
Malaysia.
The partnership will see Tourism Malaysia and MAG, through its
subsidiaries Malaysia Airlines and Firefly, collaborate on joint marketing and
promotional program activities for a three-year duration to mobilise efforts to
revive the country's tourism industry, particularly in the international
markets.
Johor to corporatise tourism arm ahead of Visit Johor Year 2026
PENGERANG: As part of preparations for Visit Johor Year 2026,
the state will be corporatising its tourism arm by the end of this year, says
Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi.
The
Mentri Besar said Tourism Johor’s organisation must be strengthened as the
state aims to be the main destination in Malaysia.
“During
an audience with Johor Regent Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim recently, the matter
about corporatising Tourism Johor was brought up.
“As
part of the state government’s initiative to strengthen its tourism sector,
Tourism Johor will undergo a corporatisation process within the next six
months.
“So by the end of this year, Tourism Johor should be
fully corporatised,” he said when met after the closing ceremony of the Johor
tourism empowerment workshop at a hotel in Bandar Penawar here on Monday (April
29).
Onn Hafiz added that corporatising government-owned
tourism agencies was not new as similar moves have been made by other state
governments.
“By corporatising Tourism Johor, we will have the
opportunity to employ individuals with strong tourism backgrounds so they can
help market local tourism products.
“This is because Tourism Johor is the main agency when
it comes to promoting tourism matters in the state,” he said.
Meanwhile, Tourism Johor director Sharil Nizam Abdul
Rahim said the move to corporatise the agency can help expand its management
scope.
“Corporatisation for Tourism Johor is actually good,
(and) will lead to improving the way we operate as the management would be
bigger and better.
"It will also be easy for us in the near future to
collaborate with private bodies, both domestically and internationally, to
bring tourists into Johor,” he added.

Tourism Malaysia Unveils Strategic Roadmap For VISIT MALAYSIA 2026
KUALA LUMPUR, 30 April
2024 – Tourism Malaysia had a prominent start on 30th April 2024 by
organising a networking session with the industry players by presenting its
strategic direction and action plans focussing on promoting Malaysia
internationally and domestically. This direction and action plans were crafted
during the engagement session with industry players to ensure the fast
conversion and high impact programme and achieve the common goal in attracting
35.6 million tourists and generate RM147.1 billion in receipts for Visit
Malaysia 2026.
The VM 2026 roadmap is built on three core strategies – creating
demand, increasing traffic, and prioritising target markets. Key initiatives
include branding and marketing blitz, strategic partnerships for joint
promotions/tactical campaigns and market segmentation.
Malaysia's notable tourism achievements for the first quarter of
2024 are promising. During this period, from January to March, Malaysia saw a
significant influx of foreign tourists, reaching 5.8 million arrivals. This
marks a remarkable growth of 32.5% compared to the previous year's 4.3 million.
The top ten markets contributing to this success were Singapore, Indonesia,
China, Thailand, Brunei, India, South Korea, the United Kingdom, Australia, and
the Philippines.
Tourism Malaysia will continue to empower its branding through
aggressive advertising campaigns, influencer marketing, and compelling content
creation across digital (70%) and traditional (30%) media platforms. The agency
will also establish strategic partnerships with airlines, online travel agents
(OTAs), and land/sea border operators of neighbouring countries to enhance
tourist arrivals.
Key target markets are prioritised into three tiers, led by
first-level priorities such as China, India, Indonesia, Vietnam and Australia.
The second-level priorities include South Korea, Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC)
countries and the United Kingdom, followed by third-level priorities comprising
Chinese Taipei and Germany. Apart from traditional markets such as Brunei,
Thailand and Singapore, the focus is also highlighted on emerging markets like
Pakistan and Bangladesh.
Meanwhile, tourism products and travel experiences will be
tailored for niche segments like nature-based tourism, experiential tourism,
medical & wellness tourism, responsible tourism, luxury, weddings,
Muslim-friendly, gastronomy, and leisure travel.
YB Dato Sri Tiong King Sing, Minister of Tourism, Arts and
Culture, said: "Our multipronged VM 2026 strategy provides a comprehensive
framework to boost Malaysia's visibility, enhance destination accessibility and
elevate our tourism offerings. Through focused efforts and strategic
collaborations, we are confident of achieving our yearly arrivals and target
receipts in the run-up to VM 2026."
Tourism Malaysia will continue engaging industry stakeholders
and international partners to refine and execute the VM 2026 strategies,
positioning Malaysia as a preferred tourist destination in this region.

Panti Bird Sanctuary can help Johor tourism soar
KOTA TINGGI: The Panti Bird Sanctuary, home to more than 300
wild birds of various species, can attract more foreign tourists to Johor, says
Ling Tian Soon.
The
state health and environmental committee chairman added that in 2004, BirdLife
International recognised the Panti Forest Reserve as an important bird and
biodiversity area (IBA).
“About
1,800ha of the forest reserve has been gazetted as Panti Bird Sanctuary since
2008. It is popular among local and foreign bird watchers.
“Last
year, 1,533 bird watchers, 1,217 of them foreigners, visited the bird sanctuary
just to observe and photograph the rare birds,” he said.
Ling, also the Yong Peng assemblyman, said this after
officiating the Panti Bird Race 2024 closing ceremony here on Sunday (April
28).
He added that, until March this year, some 314
individuals, including 234 foreigners, had visited the Panti Bird Sanctuary,
which shows that the area was a popular local tourism product among foreign
tourists.
Ling said that 308 varieties of bird species can be
found in the sanctuary, some of which are rare and protected, such as the
Malaysian Rail Babbler, an iconic bird species at the Panti Forest Reserve.
“As Johor is known for its flora and fauna, the state
government, through its 2024 Budget, has allocated more than RM67mil to improve
tourism infrastructures, including the Panti Bird Sanctuary,” he added.
At the event, Ling said the two-day Panti Bird Race 2024
attracted 117 participants, including 43 foreigners from various countries.
He added that this was the first time such an event was
held in Johor, and the state government expressed its intention to put it on
its tourism calendar.
“We are gearing up for Visit Johor Year 2026. With the
right promotion and marketing, I believe the Panti Bird Race can attract more
foreign and local birders into Johor,” he said.

-Malaysia Airlines.Malaysia sees promising growth for inbound tourism in 2024
Malaysia’s
tourism industry is poised for a remarkable rebound, with projections
indicating a surpassing of pre-pandemic levels from 2019 and a promising
trajectory for future growth, bolstered by strategic collaborations and
partnerships within the airline sector.
Malaysia
welcomed 20.1 million international tourists in 2023, generating a substantial
revenue of 71.3 billion ringgit (US$14.9 billion). Although this achievement
exceeded the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture’s target of 16.1 million
arrivals, it notably fell short of the robust figures seen in 2019, where 26.1
million international tourists contributed 86.1 billion ringgit to the
country’s economy.
Addressing
the APG Network Annual General Meeting 2024, deputy tourism, arts and culture
minister Khairul Firdaus Akbar Khan articulated the government’s ambitious
aspirations, setting a target of 27.3 million tourists and aiming for 102.7
billion ringgit in tourist expenditure for 2024.
He stressed
the ongoing promotional initiatives and events, particularly highlighting the
state-focused campaigns in Melaka, Kelantan, Perak, and Perlis. Expressing
optimism, he underscored Malaysia’s commitment to surpassing pre-pandemic
benchmarks, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
Looking
ahead, the government has set its sights even higher, with a tourism target of
31.4 million visitors and revenue of 125.5 billion ringgit slated for 2025.
For Visit Malaysia 2026, an ambitious goal of attracting 35.6
million tourists is established, with an anticipated tourism revenue of 147.1
billion ringgit.
During his
presentation at the event, Shahrin Mokhtar, director, strategic planning at
Tourism Malaysia, highlighted the pivotal role of enhanced air connectivity in
bolstering international arrivals to Malaysia.
He
elaborated on the availability of a matching grant designed to incentivise
airlines to initiate new services, augment existing frequencies, or introduce
charter services to Malaysia.
Moreover,
Tourism Malaysia is deepening its collaboration with local airlines flying on
international routes, with a specific focus on promoting stopover programmes
and seamlessly converting transit passengers at Kuala Lumpur International
Airport into tourists, thereby harnessing the full tourism potential of the
nation.
Emphasising
the significance of strategic partnerships, Shahrin also underscored the
importance of alliances with Middle Eastern airlines to attract European
tourists to Malaysia. Additionally, he highlighted the value of collaborations
with airlines operating in Singapore to entice more Chinese tourists to visit
Malaysia.
These
partnerships serve as vital conduits for diversifying and expanding Malaysia’s
tourism base, tapping into key source markets and fostering sustainable growth
in the industry.
Malaysia’s
tourism sector is expected to generate earnings of 375.3 billion ringgit over
the course of 2024 to the Visit Malaysia campaign year in 2026.
Khairul
also shared that in 2023, Malaysia recorded 20.1 million tourists, successfully
surpassing the government’s target of 16.1 million arrivals.
This year,
the government has set a target of 27.3 million tourists which will attract
some 102.7 billion ringgit in tourism revenue.

March Matta Fair charts milestone
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (Matta) said the 54th edition of the Matta Fair at the Malaysia International Trade & Exhibition Centre (Mitec) from March 22 -24 has been "exceptionally" successful.
The event surpassed expectations by attracting over 170,000 visitors and generating more than RM230 million in sales, Matta claimed.
"We have implemented a strategic plan to alleviate traffic congestion, which has been a concern during previous travel fair.
"Through the provision of shuttle services from key transportation hubs like Mitec's vicinity, KL Sentral and Sunway Putra Mall, we managed to reduce traffic-related complaints by an impressive 65 per cent.
"The overwhelming positive response to this initiative from fairgoers demonstrates the effectiveness of this approach in ensuring a smoother and more enjoyable experience for visitors," said Matta president Nigel Wong.
According to Matta, the event saw the participation of 278 exhibitors. They included 12 national tourism organisations (NTOs) and eight state tourism organisations (STOs), an indication that the Malaysian tour and travel industry remains vibrant and is expected to grow.
Domestic sales turnover amounted to more than RM31 million, indicating massive growth potential in domestic tourism which has seen significant growth post-Covid-19, it added.
Wong said Matta is working with with RapidKL to augment the transportation options available to fairgoers. As part of these efforts, he said there will be a substantial increase in the number of buses in service, significantly reducing the waiting time intervals for attendees.
This initiative is to encourage all visitors and exhibitors to take public transportation or park their cars at Sunway Putra Mall and KL Sentral for future Matta Fairs.
"The success of Matta Fair March 2024 is a significant milestone, signaling that the tourism industry is on the last stages of recovery and is geared towards rapid growth over the next few years," Wong added.
China secured the top spot among the top 10 most popular destinations with Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Turkiye, Vietnam, Taiwan, Switzerland, Italy and United Kingdom following closely.
For domestic tourism, consumers have a preference for purchasing packages from Selangor, Sabah, Terengganu, Pahang, Kedah and Penang mainly due to the logistic considerations and diverse range of attractions.
Data also revealed that during the fair, travel packages from over 67 international destinations across North Americas, Africa, Europe, Asia and Australia were in demand.

VITM Hanoi 2024 returns with the theme "Tourism—Green for

to potential destinations many have not yet discovered.

"VITM 2024 presents a valuable opportunity to promote
Malaysia's rich cultural and ecological tourism offerings," said Madam Nor
Hayati Zainuddin, Director of Tourism Malaysia in Vietnam.
Tourism Malaysia also shares updates on the latest tourism
products and destinations such as Sarawak. This is the largest state on the
island of Borneo, also known as the "Land of the Hornbills," a bird
species listed in the Red Book. Sarawak also harnesses pristine beauty, like the
Mulu cave, home to over 40 ethnic groups with distinct customs and practices
awaiting to be discovered by Vietnamese tourists.
At the event, Tourism Malaysia bags two awards which are
“Impressive Booth” and “Attractive Activities” awarded by Vietnam Tourism
Association (VITA), the organizer of VITM Hanoi 2024.
On 10th April, in conjunction with VITM Hanoi 2024, Tourism
Malaysia organised the Malaysia Tourism Seminar at the Lotte Hotel Hanoi. All
the organisations and travel companies mentioned previously were in attendance.
The seminar's goal was to provide an overview of the dynamic Malaysian tourism
market and feature the latest tourism products.
With the expectation of attracting 27.3 million foreign
tourists to Malaysia in 2024, Tourism Malaysia in Vietnam believes that
participating in VITM Hanoi 2024 will be an ideal opportunity to introduce new
destinations, diverse cultures, and unique natural wonders of Malaysia to gear
up for Visit Malaysia 2026.
Tourism Malaysia’s booth, located at C10-13, offers unique
cultural performances of Malaysian culture, appealing promotions, and
activities to learn more about the colourful country.
